OCCLUSION OF THE CENTRAL ARTERY OF THE RETINA

A serious eye disease is the sudden occlusion of a. centralis retinae. The patient very quickly loses sight most often in one eye. Conservative vasodilator therapy and corticosteroid therapy are not always effective. The effect of treatment depends on the time elapsed from the beginning of the vessel occlusion to the start of treatment. The first hours or the first 24 hours are crucial. According the conclusions of the European Society of Hyperbaric Medicine, hyperbaric oxygen therapy is suitable for this condition.

WHY HYPERBARIC OXYGEN CHAMBER?

Oxygen dissolves in the blood plasma at the elevated pressure in the chamber. The transport of oxygen is not only by haemoglobin, but also by blood plasma. Here its concentration, volume, is 20 times higher than at normal air pressure. This oxygen rush, penetrating into ischemic tissues, or through collateral circulation, although very small, can provide oxygenation of the retina and thereby prevent irreversible changes. At the same time, in ischemic tissue, hyperbaric oxygen stimulates microvessels to grow. This is the essence of the beneficial effect of HBO in the treatment of various ischemic syndromes, be it the retina of the eye or ischemic limbs. Of course, HBO treatment must be carried out in close cooperation with an ophthalmologist.

SUPPORTING VISION QUALITY WITH HBO

  • Helps suppress age-related macular degeneration
  • Relieves diabetic retinopathy
  • Reduces occlusion (closure) of the central retinal artery
  • Relieves glaucoma symptoms
