Stem cells

Stem cells have exceptional potential, which enables them to develop into several different types of cells and thereby serve as the primary tool of the system for renewal of the body. The innate ability of stem cells, enabling differentiated development into other types of cells with specific functions (blood cells, tissue cells or brain cells), helps to renew and regenerate the body, and also to suppress the aging process and disease processes. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) has been shown to significantly increase the concentration of circulating stem / progenitor cells within the peripheral circulatory system. The increase in blood plasma oxygen levels has been shown to stimulate the proliferation and mobilization of bone marrow stem cells. The supposed mechanism of action is closely related to the role of nitric oxide. This evidence, in turn, plays a key role in regenerative medicine, as an increased number of stem cells in the body has the ability to provide the body with increased and accelerated physiological renewal.

STUDIES HAVE SHOWN A BENEFICIAL THERAPEUTIC EFFECT OF HBO ON STEM CELLS DUE TO THE FOLLOWING EFFECTS

INCREASED PHYSIOLOGICAL ACTIVITY OF STEM CELLS WITH THE HELP OF HBO AND ITS BENEFICIAL PHYSIOLOGICAL EFFECT

  • Activates nitric oxide synthase 3 (NOS-3)
  • Multiplies and mobilizes stem cells derived from the bone marrow
  • Improves the cleavage and differentiation of several types of progenitor cells in organs such as the spleen, bone marrow, brain, peripheral nerve, pancreas, cartilage and heart
  • Increases the number of colony-forming cells
  • Stimulates stromal growth factor
  • Reduces high levels of ROS (reactive oxygen species)
  • Supports endothelial growth factor 2 for vascular formation
  • Increases CD34 expression and the proportion of pluripotent stem cells

HBO PROMOTES HEALING OF DISEASE OR INJURY

  • Accelerates the growth and restoration of damaged tissue
  • Improves organ regeneration and functioning
  • Promotes neurone formation
  • Stimulates bone formation
  • Relieves diabetic symptoms
  • Improves treatment after a heart attack

STUDY: STEM CELL MOBILIZATION USING HBO

A landmark study published in 2005 involved 26 patients who were at risk for osteoradionecrosis after receiving radiotherapy to treat head or neck tumours. All patients underwent 20 two-hour HBO therapy sessions, and after the first, tenth and twentieth therapies, a blood sample was taken and evaluated. The population of CD34 cells in the peripheral circulatory system doubled after the first treatment, and by the end of the trial had increased eight-fold. The number of colony-forming cells also increased significantly, while levels of vascular endothelial growth factor 2 and stromal derived growth factor increased. The study concluded that HBO mobilizes bone marrow stem/progenitor cells by stimulating nitric oxide synthesis.
