In 2013, more than 1.6 million patients were diagnosed with cancer in the US alone, and more than 500,000 patients died as a result of cancer. Cancer is one of the leading causes of mortality worldwide and new integrated treatments are increasingly used to combat its devastating effects. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBO) is currently used in combination with conventional therapies, including radiology and chemotherapy, to determine the optimal dosage for patients, stimulate tumour regression and reduce the side effects of treatment. Cancer thrives in a hypoxic environment, and it turns out that HBO can increase oxygen levels to weaken tumours and reduce their aggressiveness.

STUDY: HBO’S ROLE IN REDUCING ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND INFLAMMATION

A non-randomized trial conducted on 26 patients to evaluate the effectiveness of radiotherapy in combination with HBO in patients with malignant glioma. Fifteen patients received daily radiotherapy after receiving HBO, and fourteen other patients received radiotherapy without HBO. In the HBO group, 11 out of 15 patients showed ≥ 50% tumour regression. In the non-HBO group, only 4 out of 14 patients (29 percent) experienced tumour regression. Median survival in patients receiving HBO doubled compared to the group of patients without HBO (24 months vs. 12 months). No serious side effects were reported in the HBO group. This fact presents another argument in favour of HBO as a treatment with a beneficial effect for patients with malignant glioma.
