STUDY: HBO’S ROLE IN REDUCING ATHEROSCLEROSIS AND INFLAMMATION

In 2008, a study was published that examined the effects of HBO on mice with atherosclerosis (a fat coating covering the walls of arteries). Two groups of mice received 5 or 10 weeks of HBO therapy, while two other groups remained untreated and served as controls. After receiving low-density lipoprotein, the HBO group showed positive changes in their immune/inflammatory response. This process is a critical component of HBO’s beneficial effects. The study showed that HBO significantly reduced the level of circulating low-density lipoprotein, which in turn can cause heart disease, kidney disease, stroke, etc. In addition, HBO led to a significant suppression of the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in response to the inflammatory stimulus and thereby showed a significant increase in the production of the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin 10 in spleen cells. These changes were observed as early as 5 weeks of treatment.
