FAQ

What exactly is hyperbaric oxygen therapy and oxygen therapy?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is a type of treatment that involves administering pure 100% oxygen at high pressure. This treatment method is based on a simple physical principle. In the barochamber, there is an increase in pressure to 2.5 ATA, which is about as much as if we dived to a depth of 14 metres below the surface of water. With this overpressure, the amount of oxygen in body fluids increases significantly and also reaches tissues that suffer from a lack of oxygen. Through this mechanism, oxygen is supplied to parts of the body where red blood cells cannot reach. At the normal atmospheric pressure we live in, most oxygen is carried in the blood by haemoglobin in red blood cells, and only 2-2.5% is dissolved in body fluids. At elevated pressure, the amount of dissolved oxygen in body fluids increases – with an overpressure of 3 ATA, up to 6% by volume of oxygen reaches the tissues. This amount is enough to save tissues threatened by lack of oxygen.

What kinds of hyperbaric chambers are there and what do you specifically have in the clinic?

There are different models of hyperbaric chambers, either single chambers, in which the patient lies alone, or multi-person/bus chambers, where patients sit side by side. We have single chambers that provide the patient with an individual approach and privacy. We have completely transparent chambers, so even claustrophobics have no problem with us.

Is this therapy new?

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been mentioned since the 1930s and has its foundations in diving medicine. Currently, this therapy is approved by the Ministry of Health and health insurance companies cover this treatment depending on the diagnosis the patient comes with.

Why have I never heard of hyperbaric therapy?

It’s a very old therapy that required very specific equipment. Today, we have all the necessary technology to properly and effectively conduct treatment. The origins go back to socialist countries, where the state tried to minimize the costs of hospitals and speed up the treatment of the sick. Unfortunately, even today, there is insufficient promotion of the benefits of hyperbaric therapy, which would be helped by more education of doctors – specialists in this field.

How does it work and what is the effect of hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

This is pure oxygen, which the patient breathes under high pressure. The latter is dissolved in blood plasma. This achieves a large amount of pure oxygen in arterial and venous blood, which is used directly in the tissues, without the need for the presence of red blood cells. These high pure oxygen levels and high pressure are the perfect environment for the beneficial effects of hyperbaric oxygen. The main effects are: anti-infectious, anti-oedema, detoxifying, formation of new vessels, stimulation of collagen production, which implies, among other things, acceleration of wound healing.

How does the therapy work?

The patient breathes pure oxygen in a single pressurized chamber. The patient, lies, relaxes, listens to music.

How long does one session – exposure last?

The duration of the session can vary from 60 to 90 minutes, depending on the patient’s diagnosis.

During exposure, is the patient alone in the chamber?

Yes, during the entire session, the patient is alone in the chamber.  Qualified and certified staff are present in the clinic, who operate the chamber and communicate with the patient.

What are the sensations during treatment in the chamber?

When the patient gets into the hyperbaric chamber, we begin to gradually increase the pressure by infusing pure oxygen. The patient feels a slight pressure in the ears, which is easy to remove, similar to when an aeroplane climbs.

Is the presence of a doctor required in hyperbaric treatment?

Before starting a new treatment, it is necessary to consult our doctor, who will assess whether the therapy is suitable for the patient. Once this is done, the manipulation of the hyperbaric chambers is carried out by qualified and certified personnel specifically for the application of this therapy.
